The Third (Summer) English Review Writing Course Enrollment Notice

Having successfully accomplished the first two workshops, Shandong University (Weihai) Global Engagement Academy is now starting the third round of classes on English Review Writing. This short course aims to spread knowledge on theory and practice of international public opinion, improving students` written and oral debate skills using English language, enhancing intercultural communication skills, and helping students to strengthen planning and implementation skills of mutual learning and exchange between Chinese civilization and other world civilizations. The course activities are provided by well-known professors at China and abroad, senior English editors, popular English columnists and famed political commentators.

The objectives of the training course are as follows: 1. To help students master the basic national conditions and international public opinion; 2. Help students master the basic theories and laws of international communication agenda setting; 3. Help students to write a high-quality review article in English, which has strong timeliness in topic selection, a novel angle of discussion and good social effect; 4. Help students get familiar with both the writing skills of modern think tank analysis reports and international publishing channels of Humanities and Social Sciences papers. In addition to lectures, the teachers of the training class also provide one-on-one, hand-in-hand English review writing guidance and correction after class. In addition, the wechat group with teachers and students participating in the exchange and discussion during and after the training course will provide a lot of valuable international public opinion information. In order to make the topic new and effective, the due date for the course assignment of writing a review can be extended for quality purposes. If found to be of high quality and timely, the English review may be recommended to the relevant English media for possible publication.

Extracurricular assignment: students read and evaluate original English commentary articles published by Chinese and foreign media.

1Target Audience

Who can apply: media personnel; diplomats; public affairs personnel; public officials of different levels; researchers from research institutes of different disciplines; university professors; senior undergraduates; M.A. students and Ph.D. candidates, and other colleagues who are interested in contributing to the enhancement of China's global soft power. The maximum number of students is 150. Participants are selected basing on: individual voluntary registration, organizational recommendations, and merit-based admission.

6Course Attendance Rules

During the course activities participants should use their real names to join the online conference platform 20 minutes in advance. Participants should listen carefully and remain silent during the lecture, making comments and asking questions in a specific time. Any screen recording is prohibited.

Keynote speakers

Jia Wenshan: Ph. D. in Communication Studies, University of Massachusetts (Amherst Flagship Campus), Distinguished Professor, Ph. D. Advisor, Shandong University; Dean of the Global Engagement Academy, Shandong University (Weihai).  His main research interests are communication theory, intercultural / international / global communication, public diplomacy, Sino-US relations, etc. Professor Jia Wenshan has published more than 100 papers/chapters/reviews in both Chinese and English, and published more than 10 compilations/works/translations in both Chinese and English languages, many of which have won honors as outstanding works in China and the United States. He is currently Editor-in-Chief of “Chinese Perspectives on Journalism & Communication” series, published by Taylor & Francis/Routledge, and “The Belt & Road Initiative: Interdisciplinary Perspectives”, published by Peter Lang. In recent years, Dr. Jia has been invited to write and published a number of comments in both Chinese and English on China's foreign affairs and Sino-Us relations, which has exerted some good social impact.

He Weiwen: Senior Research Fellow, Chongyang Institute of Finance, Renmin University of China; Director of Center for Sino-European Studies, China International Trade Society; Research Fellow of China Foundation for International Studies; Editor-in-Chief of “China International Finance”; Vice-Chairman of Global Alliance of Small and Medium Enterprises, China Focus’s final reviewer. From 1997 to 2003, Mr. He served as Economic and Commercial Counselor of the Consulates General of China in San Francisco and New York. From 1993 to 1996, he was Deputy Editor-in-chief of the International Business Daily. Previously, He Weiwen was Secretary-General of China International Economic Information Center and Representative in Europe (Cologne, Germany); Assistant Researcher and Deputy Director of the Institute of International Trade, Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation; and employee of the Secretariat of the Fifth Session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. He received a Bachelor`s degree in Foreign Trade and Economics from the University of International Business and Economics in 1967, and a certificate in Senior Manager Training from Harvard Business School in 1995. Mr. He is the author of "Chamber of Commerce", "Over the Pacific Ocean-An Overview of the U.S. West Coast Market", "Winning in the U.S."; and more than 200 articles.

Yu Bin: Professor of Department of Politics, Wittenberg University, United States; Special Research Fellow, China/Russia/Central Asia, Pacific Forum (CSIS), Shanghai American Society; Senior Research Fellow, Russian Research Center, East China Normal University. Professor Yu has been a Research Fellow at the Center for International Studies of the State Council; a visiting scholar at the East-West Center in Hawaii and the U.S. Army War College.

Lecture Topic: “How to Write an Analytical Article on International Relations”.

Wen Zha: Professor Emeritus, China Educational Television Broadcasting Supervision; an adjunct professor of the National Administration College,  the National Education Administration College, and the School of Continuing Education of Tsinghua University.

Lecture Topic: “The Diplomatic Debates”.

Ding Gang: Senior editor of The Global Times, English edition of the人民日报 (“People`s Daily”). He became one of the first Chinese journalists to enter the scene after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the United States. His report won the first prize in China International News. In 2006, his article "How Do We Express Our Patriotic Enthusiasm" won the first prize of the 16th China News Award for Online Commentary. In recent years, he has written a large number of political commentaries in both Chinese and English, and has won the China News Award several times. Ding Gang is the author of "In Search of World War II", "De-Americanization to Reposition China`s Modernization", "China`s Direction" and other books. Ding Gang received M.A. in Journalism from the Chinese Academy of Social Science

Gao Jingyu: one of the founders and academic editor of International Critical Thought, an English quarterly journal of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. She studied at the School of International Relations of Peking University and the Marxist Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, where she received her Ph.D. Her professional interests are political science and political philosophy.

Lecture Topic: "How should Chinese Scholars Engage in Academic Dialogue with the International Thought and Theoretical communities?" – The Case of International Thought Review.

Gong Jiong: Ph.D. in Economics, University of Texas at Austin, USA. Currently, he is a professor and Ph.D. supervisor at Department of Economics, University of International Business and Economics, Beijing, China. He has published articles on economics and electronic engineering in the world`s first-class periodical papers. Gong Jiong was the Executive Editor of the Journal of Chinese Economic and Foreign Trade Studies (JCEFTS), an authoritative English-language journal on Chinese International Trade, published by Emerald Publishing House, the United Kingdom. He is also a columnist for a number of Asian English-language newspapers, including The South China Morning Post, The Global Times, CGTN and other media outlets. He is also a regular guest of many programs at CCTV.

He has several official online accounts: "Gao Zhikai Channel" (“高志凯频道”) and "Gao Talk Blog" (“高谈博论”).

Lecture Topic: “How to Tell the Chinese Story Well?”

Zhang Chao: Professor, Department of Journalism, School of Culture and Communication, Shandong University; Ph.D. Supervisor, Assistant Dean, School of Culture and Communication, Shandong University; Research Fellow, Global Engagement Academy, Shandong University (Weihai). Zhang Chao obtained Ph.D. degree from Renmin University of China; completed M.A. and Bachelor`s degrees from Shandong University. His research interests are data news, new media, television news and public diplomacy. He published 20 CSSCI papers and 10 CSSCI extended edition papers as the first author. Zhang Chao was in charge of one national social science project and one project of the Ministry of Education; also selected as "Shandong University (Weihai) Young Scholars Future Plan" participants. He is the author of "Unleashing the Power of Data: Data Journalism Production and Ethical Research" and "Out of the Picture Report".
